In 1999 Saint Petersburg State Technical University (SPbSTU) celebrates the 100th anniversary.
SPbSTU was based in 1899 year as the St.-Petersburg Politechnical Institute named after Tsar Peter the Great with active participation of D.I.Mendeleev, D.K.Chernov, A.N.Krylov, A.S.Popov. From the very biginning it occupied leading position in education, scientific researches and preparation of the engineering and scientific staff in Russia.
During the World War II SPbSTU valuably contributed to historical victory of Soviet Union. Works at first space ship with a man onboard and other space programms were carried out in University. Among the gradutes of SPbSTU were: Nobel Laureates P.L.Kapitsa and N.N.Semenov, designer of atomic weapon Yu.B.Khariton, famous aircraft designers O.K.Antonov and N.N.Polikarpov, designer of legendary tank T-34 M.I.Koshkin. Famous russian scientists A.F.Ioffe, I.V.Kurchatov, A.A.Fridman worked in University.
Now SPbSTU is the largest scientific and educational centre in Russia. Present Governor of St.-Petersburg Mr. Vladimir Yakovlev is current professor of SPbSTU. SPbSTU graduates now successfully work in science, business and policy.
The Union of Young Scientists of SPbSTU was founded as a nongovernmental public association and its main goal is the development of scientific traditions. One of results of its 5 years activity is organization of International Youth Environmental Forum "ECOBALTICA" the second time in St.-Petersburg.
SPbSTU carry out many environmental programs and is very interested in developing of environmental science in Russia. "ECOBALTICA" gives an excellent opportunity for young scientists from SPbSTU, Russia and all Bultic region to exchange their experience and results, and assists solving problems of youth professional level improvement. It also allows to involve youth in decision-making process for regional environmental problems. New ideas in the field of educational process and technologies, environmental issues are very important now. A cooperation in these fields in Baltic region is required. "ECOBALTICA" is one of our general steps on the way to solve these problems.
